When I founded Ohio Gun Owners over half a decade ago to deal with Ohio’s oppressive concealed carry laws and lack of Stand-Your-Ground law, there was such a thing as a ‘blue dog’ Democrat in the Ohio legislature.
These were fiscally conservative Democrats who were in the middle of the road when it came to social issues like our great Second Amendment.
If you’ve been involved in the fight for gun rights for a while, you’ll remember that Democrat State Representative Glenn Holmes stood up, became a co-sponsor of and voted for HB 142, repeal of Ohio’s Duty to Notify law, when it passed the House chamber in fall of 2017 – after the members of Ohio Gun Owners forced his hand.
Today, everything is different in Columbus.
Feeling energized by the war against our freedoms playing out in Congress and the White House, radical leftists in Columbus are chomping at the bit, eager to advance freedom shredding legislation like:
>>> ‘Red Flag Gun Confiscation’ legislation (like SB 138 and HB 257) that would empower liberal judges to order your firearms to be seized based on the word of an embittered ex-spouse during a secret court hearing that you know nothing about, all before you’ve been charged or convicted of anything!
>>> Bloomberg’s Universal Background Check law (SB 73) that would require every Ohioan to be tracked, traced, and registered like a convicted sex offender for simply loaning a Remington 870 to a hunting buddy!
>>> Legislation to repeal Ohio’s pre-emption statute (HB 274 and SB 76) which is the only thing stopping anti-gun mayors in towns like Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland and dozens of others from enacting their own local gun control laws.
It’s safe to say that every single Democrat in Columbus (and more than a few moderate Republicans) hate the Second Amendment, they hate gun owners like you and me who fight to protect it. And they are doing everything they can to crush our right to keep and bear arms!
And these three bills are just three of the control bills that gun-grabbers have been pushing for over the last two years.
I’ll be honest, I don’t see this trend reversing any time soon. In fact, I think it’s only going to heat up with everything that is going on in our nation right now.
That’s why I am writing you today.
The mission of Ohio Gun Owners has always been to stop gun control, advance pro-gun legislation, and to hold the politicians who stand in the way of those goals accountable.
Each of these efforts are vitally important to the future of our freedoms here in Ohio — but they come at a cost.
And when you combine our work to stop gun control bills in Ohio with our fight to enact Constitutional Carry and the Second Amendment Preservation Act, while also pouring pressure on Ohio’s Congressional delegation to stop Biden’s war on guns in D.C., the costs add up FAST!
And while I’m able to make budget allotments at the beginning of the year after we complete our annual renewal program, after the first few months of the year, I often am forced to make cuts in our programs because we can’t afford them.
With the growing threats that we are facing, that is the last thing that I want to do.
